Luyanda Botha, convicted of killing Uyinene Mrwetyana, held a 21-year-old nursing student hostage for several hours, the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court heard on Friday.

The 2019 rape and murder of 19-year-old Mrwetyana, a University of Cape Town student, sent shockwaves through the country with angry protesters marching to Parliament to demand the government act to end violence against women.

Mrwetyana’s murder became a rallying cry for the #AmINext movement.
